In June 2003, the Stanford University has announced the open source
release of its course management system, called CourseWork. Since this open source
release of CourseWork, the Stanford University has joined forces with three other
institutions, the University of Michigan, Indiana University and MIT, to
develop the new Collaboration and Learning Environment. This community source
software development effort, called the Sakai Project, aims to create open
source course management tools and related software for the higher education
community. With Stanford's participation in the Sakai project, further
development on the open source release of CourseWork version 3.0 has ceased and
will no longer be made available.
